Ten years ago, a company named FromSoftware took the world of video games by storm with the first entry in what was later to become the Dark Souls trilogy. The game was so unique and ingenious, and the phenomenon so big, that it even ended up spawning its own genre, namely the Souls-like games. Much like the casino en ligne of the moment, Dark Souls was on the tip of everybody’s tongue, and the Souls-like genre rapidly grew out of proportions. Several title contenders were launched in the upcoming years, and most of these Souls-like games proved to be worthy contenders to the action RPG throne. This is where we have to mention popular titles like Demo’s Souls, Bloodborne, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and the list could go on and on.
Of course, a lot of time has passed since then, and with the substantial technology boom registered in-between, we can now talk of 3D Souls-like games with far more advanced graphics and special effects. In the article ahead, we’re bringing you the Top 10 Best Souls-like Games 2021, that you must stay tuned for, and that you simply cannot miss!
- Elden Ring
A bit atypical for our usual MO, but we are going to start our incursion in the world of upcoming Souls-like titles with what we believe to be the hottest entry in our list. We’re talking about Elden Ring, powered by the same company that brought us the Dark Souls series, FromSoftware. The Souls-like definition wouldn’t be complete without extremely tough challenges, mythical characters much like we can see in Bloodborne, Demon’s Souls, or Soulsborne, and naturally, larger-than-life creatures that you have to battle with. Elden Ring promises to deliver all of that, and more. The action takes place in The Lands Between, a mythical world spawned from the mind of George R.R. Martin himself, with whom FromSoftware closely collaborated for the current release. There will be 6 different regions in the game, each one led by a demigod, and, for the first time, players will be able to cross them on horseback. All in all, Elden Ring is set to bring us the perfect Souls-like formula, so it’s an absolute must-try.
- Hollow Knight – Silksong
From Tom Cherry comes a brand-new entry in the Hollow Knight series, which is widely regarded as one of the best Souls-like creations of all time. Expectations are high, as Silksong sets out to surpass the previous installments and become the best game in the series up to this date. Initially conceived as an expansion mode, Silksong quickly became too large for just that. Players can expect Hornet to dive deep into a new mysterious real, taking on another exciting adventure, filled with dangers and monsters from the already consecrated Souls-like universe. As for the biggest change, this new game will follow the players’ journey in reverse, starting from the depths of the new realm and moving upwards.
- Black Myth – Wu Kong
While the Chinese studio Games Science is beginning its incursion in the world of video games, their debut title, Black Myth – Wu Kong, is already expected to be one of the most creative and engaging Souls-like steam releases this year. If you were to judge the upcoming game by the trailers released so far, it would seem that we are about to witness a video game version of the classic Journey to the West novel, set out in an outstanding Souls-like universe. If players are actually going to have the opportunity to impersonate the Monkey King himself, remains to be seen. With no less than 72 abilities to his name, this character fits perfectly in the Souls-like formula, and we can hardly wait to see if this is what Black Myth – Wu Kong has in store for us!
- Sands of Aura
From Chashu Entertainment, a fairly unknown video games studio, comes Sands of Aura, a post-apocalyptic Souls-like RPG, introducing a wide variety of fantasy themes and elements. Reminiscent of the fantastic Dune saga, players are set to embark on a journey of discovery in a world that has been completely taken over by sands. Instead of the gigantic sand worms, here you will be sailing across vast seas of sand, all while having to outstand complex battles and immersing yourself into the true Souls-like RPG system of the game. The promises are ambitious, the trailers are on point, and so far, Sands of Aura seems to have all the right Souls-like elements in check. But, of course, only the sands of time can tell…
Launched in the summer of 2021, Thymesia is a gripping action-RPG with Souls-like mechanics and narrative. Developed by the popular Team17, this game has some of the fastest-paced combats in the Souls-like genre, and one of the most intricate plague weapon systems we’ve ever laid eyes on. The main character, Corvus, is a mysterious individual that must traverse a derelict kingdom, very similar to those of Bloodborne and Dark Souls. It’s a pretty powerful story of reconstructing the world from the past and figuring out what went wrong in the first place. Of course, all of this while preying upon your enemies, wielding the power of diseases, and finding the truth about the main protagonist as well. Bottom line, Thymesia is one of the best Souls-like releases this year, and it comes highly recommended.
- Lies of P
Round8 Studio promises a unique take on the classic tale of Pinocchio with the Souls-like game Lies of P. Inspired by the darker Italian story behind the popular Disney version, the game is most likely going to add its own fantasy elements and visual interpretation of the protagonist’s adventure. From what we know so far, the mechanical Pinocchio is set to wake up and find a note prompting him to find his master and creator Geppetto. The action takes place in the city of Krat and, for reasons unknown yet, players will have to battle monsters and machinations in order to advance to their goal. There are still a lot of unknowns concerning the Souls-like mechanics and combat system, but it’s safe to assume that we won’t see any 2D Souls-like settings. Judging by the theatrical trailer, Lies of P will most likely be a visual action-RPG masterpiece, so stay tuned!
Unlike most Souls-like games out there, Moonray seems to be going for a more slash-and-dash combat system. Players will start by taking control of golems, which have been spawned by deities in order to directly assist and help a cult. The premise is quite original, and the game benefits from a script written by Grim Wilkins. This is about as far as we know in this upcoming Souls-like release, which is expected to drop sometime in October 2022. If you’re wondering why it made the current list, you should know that the Early Access is already live, so you can go ahead and check the game at any time.
- Sand in the Soul
Speaking of 2D Souls-like settings, the upcoming release from MPG Studios promises to deliver just that. A 2D side scrolling Souls-like RPG that is certainly not afraid to take risks and bring something new to the table. In hopes to outclass the best Souls-like games of the moment, Sand in the Soul aims to introduce no less than 30 different possible outcomes to the saga of the protagonist. Think of Black Mirror meets Bloodborne in 2D, and you might be onto something!
- Lords of the Fallen II
Any true Souls-like fan out there knows about Lords of the Fallen, and is probably wondering why the upcoming sequel is not occupying one of the top positions in our list. The reason is pretty simply, whether the game will end up being released this year or never, is pretty much anybody’s guess. By now, Lords of the Fallen 2 has years in development and several release dates to its name, so it’s quite hard to put all your trust in the latest 2021 announced date. But one thing is for certain, if it does get released, LoF 2 has the potential of becoming one of the top Souls-like games 2021 in no-time. All we can do is hope, and wait to find out.
- Black Faith – Forsaken
Black Faith: Forsaken is definitely not your typical souls-like game. Believe it or not, this outstanding release and upcoming entry in the Souls-like genre is the creation of only two people. The reason why it’s so far ahead on our list is precisely this. Black Faith is a Kickstarter-funded project with a minimum development team behind it, namely the duo behind Archangel Studio. Nevertheless, judging by the 14 minutes-long trailer already available online, Black Faith: Forsaken promises to be a well-rounded and highly addictive souls-like game. You can also know about the HWID Spoofer.
